Welcome, September! I just love the crisp air in the morning, how things appear more multi-faced, more magical and more real at the same time under the crystalline Autumn light. I know there wasn't that fierce heat of Summers past and the warmth coming and going still persists and probably will through October and maybe even November, but the warmth has a far more pleasant silkiness than that of the past months. The square is buzzing just as much, but it feels more real, the beloved tourists dissipating and children back at school. The Autumn tourists arriving now will spend their days visiting cultural sights or walking, where the green of Umbria yields progressively to an array of golden and red colours, rather than days spent by the pool, in search of shade and respite from torridity. They will assist grape harvesting (and our grape festival!), buy chestnusts from the vendors in the streets. I love waking up to find the landscape hiding under a blanket of fog, knowing that it will lift and reveal its bewitching vision. I love the woody smell of rain and the earthy scent of mushrooms and truffles. I love the cool nights where you snuggle up in the quilt, I love the acidic taste of crunchy apples picked from the tree. I love spinach and comforting stew in the evening, pumpkin risotto, hot chocolate with cream. I love witchy tea parties with happy friends. Nothing compares to evening walks among colourful leaves watching the glowing horizon of a bleeding sky fading slowly to a pale pink... biding you goodbye and preparing you for a new day, the first of the rest of your life.
